James G. Willie was the leader of the Willie Handcart Company who, along with the Martin Handcart company, endured great hardships crossing the plains to Utah in 1857. After experiencing the arudous trek, Willie was called to help settle the town of Mendon, Utah

He served as the mayor, postmaster, and ran the co-operative store. James was trained as a leather tanner and had a small shop. Here, his wife Elizabeth Ann served as the first Relief Society President, and their home, which they lived in for more than 40 years, was constructed in around 1865.

The home was restored by Paul Willie, James G. Willie's great-grandson.
